2010 Taebaeksan Mountains Snow Festival Snow Flowers and Mountain Majesty
Want to really see some snow? Head out to beautiful Taebaek in Gangwon-do to take part in the 2010 Taebaeksan Mountains Snow Festival. Thanks to this year's heavy snowfall, the scenery in Taebaek will be truly breathtaking. Most of the fun takes place at Taebaeksan Mountain Provincial Park, dominated by the peak of Mt. Taebaeksan (1,567m), one of Korea's biggest and --- as the backdrop to the Dangun foundation story --- spiritually most important mountain. One highlight, no doubt, will be the record-breaking 5,000-person snowball fight (8pm---9pm, Jan 22) at ski resort O2. The real highlight, though, is the views: snow blankets the rugged mountain landscape, with the snow-covered trees making so-called "snow flowers." VENUE: Taebaeksan Mountain Provincial Park, O2 Resort and elsewhere, Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do PERIOD: Jan 22---31 ADMISSION: Free CONTACT: 033-550-2083. For more information, click here GETTING THERE: Buses to Taebaek leave from Seoul's Dongseoul Terminal. The trip takes about three hours. TIP: Another way to get to Taebaek is by train from Cheongnyangni. Winter trains to the eastern parts of the Korea are quite popular as it takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country.

Gapyeong's lovely Gapyeongcheon Stream and Jarasum Island host the Jarasum January Festival, a great opportunity to take in Korea's spectacular winter scenery. You don't have to be a sportsman to enjoy the ice-fishing, one of the festival's most popular events. There will be plenty of other events, too, including Korean traditional ice sledding, snow sledding, star-gazing, wish-making and Friday evening jazz concerts. Fun is guaranteed for all! British Ambassador Martin Uden will be talking about the latter days of the Joseon Dynasty as seen by foreign observers at the Royal Asiatic Society Korea. Drawing on his own extensive book and magazine collection, Ambassador Uden will show how foreigners, both resident and visiting, viewed Joseon dynasty Korea, from the opening of Korea in the 1880s to Japanese annexation. The view often advanced by some authors of Korea as a backward nation that could only benefit from administration by a more technologically modern power is only part of the picture. Other observers saw an ancient culture worthy of preservation and believed only independence could achieve that.
